明治4年に廃藩置県が行われ、「県」の統廃合があり、11月14日（旧暦）に「埼玉県」が誕生しました。生まれたばかりの埼玉県は今と違って、荒川より東の地域でした。荒川の西が入間県で、明治6年に群馬県と合併して熊谷県に。そして、明治9年、埼玉県と旧入間県が合併して、今の埼玉県とほぼ同じ形になったのです。当時の資料によると、人口は896,107人でした。
昭和46年、それからちょうど100年目に当たるのを記念して、11月14日を「県民の日」としました。県内では、毎年この日を中心にいろいろなイベントが開催されます。
